“Comparison is the thief of joy,” attributed to President Theodore Roosevelt and others, evokes a powerful sentiment that can be life-changing. If we compare ourselves to others, we may be left with feelings of inferiority or superiority—and neither creates an emotionally healthy human being!
*Comparison is the death of joy is attributed to Mark Twain
Why is it un-healthy?
No matter how well you’re doing, comparing yourself to other people takes your eyes off your goals. And it can cause you to feel bad about how you’re doing–because there will always be someone who looks happier, wealthier, healthier, and more successful.
The feelings of “I should be where they are”, ” I should be lifting heavier because they are” , “I should have a better house cause they have” , “I should have a better figure to match theirs”. All these thought have a negative effect on not only our self esteem and mental health, but can demotivate us if we fall into the “It is not worth the effort as I will never achieve X Y or Z”
Look at others for motivation ! if someone is lifting heavier, change your mindset to “that is where I will be in 4-8-16 weeks” not I should be lifting that”, If someone has a nice house, they will have worked and saved for it, use this a motivation if you want that house, think “they did it, so can I ! “.

How do I stop comparing ? It`s not easy, especially with social media.
1 : Awareness. Often we do these social comparisons without realising we’re doing it, we scroll endlessly through instagram and facebook, be aware when looking at the posts that many are not”real life” , they are the best bits of life – Highlights
2 : Stop yourself, set a time for social media, delete accounts that make you feel inadequate, that you find yourself comparing to.
3: Count your blessings. List the things you have to be grateful for.
4: Focus on your strengths. Again list, make a list of the things that make you strong, confident, your achievements , take a good look at that list and you will come to realise that you are AMAZING and you have nothing to compare yourself to !
5: Don’t knock others , ok so yes they may have what you want, or wish for but don`t drag them down, remember they have worked hard , and are still working hard and to be honest, they probably compare themselves to others and feel like you some days,
6:Focus on your journey. Oh the “journey” word ! But life is a journey and if you spend time focussing on someone elses and not your own , you will delay your goals !
7: Finally patience, everything comes to those who work hard and have patience

Change your comparison to aspiration !
To aspire is to rise up to a great plan, fulfilling a worthwhile mission. If you aspire to be like someone , model yourself after their best qualities and mannerisms but importantly create your best YOU . You can aspire to be like someone who inspires you, just don`t compare your life to theirs. That persons life is not yours, they are not from your house, they chose different paths to get where they are, they may have had opportunities not afforded to you , t compare your life to theirs is not an equal comparison.

Finally…. as this is a blog post on a fitness website GENES
This post came about as I found myself comparing myself to someone else! and realised it really wasn`t worth it!
If a lot of your comparison is based around looking like someone else, remember an important fact GENES & DNA – this is science and there is nothing you can do.
Weight : if you are comparing your weight to someone else STOP !! Yes, you can lose weight, but it doesn`t mean you will look like anyone else!
Research suggests that for some people, genes account for just 25% of the predisposition to be overweight, while for others the genetic influence is as high as 70% to 80%. Having a rough idea of how large a role genes play in your weight may be helpful in terms of treating your weight problems.
You want visible abs – again genes will determine these
Your ability to achieve a visible pack of abs — whether a four-, six-, or eight-pack — is largely determined by genetics. However, healthy lifestyle choices, like losing belly fat and exercising, can provide anyone with a fit and toned abdomen. A strong core also helps with overall strength and balance
Muscles mass – are you not growing fast enough ,
The amount of skeletal muscle mass each person has can vary significantly. Skeletal muscle mass can be increased if a person undertakes strength exercise but genetic factors play an equally important role in determining how much muscle mass a person can have.
Gene Fun Fact : BLUE EYES
Scientists have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6,000-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye color of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today. New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor.
